31 Days of Adventure ~ Day 6

Day 6 | January 6

Rock out to a new beat

Break out of your regular playlist and listen to new music today.

Check out your local venues and go see a new band. Change your Pandora station to something you've never heard of. Listen to an opera in its entirety.

I like to think that my interests in music are quite varied. My running playlist consists of artists ranging from Eminem to Billy Joel, mixed in with a side of Tool and Missy Elliott. At work I often tune into classical {baroque} stations and lately, even some Mantra Radio (Krishna Das being a favorite). Let me tell you, it really helps to calm the mind and stay centered after a trip to the water cooler/gossip HQ.

I grew up on country music mainly...stringing the old reel-to-reel with Waylon Jennings and Mel Tillis for my dad's listening pleasure. There was a sprinkling of Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly (and the Crickets) along with the Beach Boy, which my mom loved. But I just can't get myself to listen to Country music these days...and, since I truly believe that you should get pleasure from listening to music, I decided not to force myself into trying it again for this challenge.
Instead, I opted to create a Pandora radio station based on a band I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing right before New Years (Thank You Mr. & Mrs. Robertson)...Mother Hips. I fell in love with this band from the first song they played (they were opening for Jackie Green, another amazing artist). Mother Hips just celebrated 20 years of California Soul music (hey, didn't Pearl Jam, my other favorite band, just celebrate 20 years together??) and are definitely worth a listen.

  1. I'm listening to the Mother Hips as I type this. They are really good! I love, love it when bloggers post about music. I have such an eclectic mix of tunes on my iphone, my husband says that if anyone ever found it on the street and browsed my library they wouldn't know if I were 22 or 82. lol
I am listening to a LOT of older Tori Amos lately. And Peter Gabriel's New Blood which is a wonderful collection of his best work with a 46 piece orchestra accompanying him. I didn't think I'd like it at first but it is awesome!

  2. How exciting! See, another thing we have in common!!! My husband has really turned me on to singer/song-writers and it has changed the way I listen to music. I have a whole new appreciation for these unbelievable artists. BTW, I LOVE Peter Gabriel and just 'dedicated' his version of The Book of Love to my new hubby. I will definitely check out New Blood!

I've also found a new love for Carly Simon after watching Little Black Book in which Brittany Murphy's character say her mom believed that all problems could be solved by listening to Carly Simon. Too funny! Plus she is an amazing writer.
